The excitement of Indian supporters at the prestigious Malaysia Open Super 1000 has begun with the opening of the 2026 badminton season. In Kuala Lumpur’s Axiata Arena, Indian Badminton players experienced a rollercoaster ride of emotions during the first day of play. A strong victory for “Queen of Indian Badminton” PV Sindhu was announced when the Indian Team’s performances were overshadowed by the loss of both veteran players Lakshya Sen and up-and-comer Ayush Shetty as they were eliminated during the Men’s Singles.

P.V. Sindhu, who recently returned to full fitness after being injured, once again proved herself as a top player on the world stage today when she easily defeated Japan’s rising star, Tomoka Miyazaki (the 8th-seeded player) in straight sets, scoring 21-8, 21-13.
P.V. Sindhu, who recently returned to full fitness after being injured, once again proved herself as a top player on the world stage today when she easily defeated Japan’s rising star, Tomoka Miyazaki (the 8th-seeded player) in straight sets, scoring 21-8, 21-13.
The match was only 32 minutes long, but the way it was played was an excellent example of how to control aggression. Sindhu showed how well she moves on the court, and her steep smashes were enough to keep the 17-year-old Miyazaki running around like mad. Sindhu has demonstrated that she is ready to win titles by qualifying for the quarterfinals; this is a clear indication that she is back and serious about winning. Another strength of Sindhu is how easily she finishes matches.
Whereas Sindhu looked comfortable in her match, Lakshya Sen faced a somewhat disappointing match against Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong. Even though he is currently ranked No. 13 in the world, Sen started the match very well and played with his usual great defense and ability at the net. Sen was in control the first game and was leading 11-9 at the mid-game break. He even had game points. Then Sen made one mistake that allowed Lee to come back.
While most young athletes would buckle at the thought of facing a competitor boasting their reputation, Shetty did not back down. He went up against the elite of the game and came away victorious by taking down the second game of the match pushing his opponent to play a deciding set. The final score read 21 – 18, 18 – 21, 21 – 12 and tells a tale of a competitive match; although Shetty lost, he had no fear in challenging the world’s number one seed and he took him to a deciding set. This bodes well for Indian Badminton moving forward as he is now seen as the next generation’s star of the sport.
Looking ahead, PV Sindhu, and the men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, now have their attention turned to them after the conclusion of men’s singles play. The competition is intensifying, and it will continue to get harder as we move further through the tournament.
As a fan, now is the time to become more involved in the sport. Don’t just sit back and enjoy watching the athletes perform from your living room. If you have opportunities to attend the international tournaments, get out there and support your favourite athlete(s); or if possible, gather your friends and host a viewing party. The excitement surrounding a Super 1000 Tournament is phenomenal, and celebrating and supporting the athletes regardless of the outcome keeps the spirit of the game alive.
