BCCI Strikes Again: Axar Patel Latest Victim Of IPL's Slow Over-Rate Crackdown
Out of nowhere, money got taken from Axar Patel. The Indian cricket board does this sort of thing often now, especially during the IPL. Not long after he helped his team stay alive with a strong batting turn, trouble arrived. Delhi took too long between overs, it seems. Because of that delay, twelve hundred thousand rupees were pulled straight from their pockets.
Leadership Comes With Sharp Edges Lately
One more skipper joins the tally after a steep fine hit his account. According to Khelosports, this IPL season shows stricter oversight than ever before. Close to fifty percent of team leaders now carry penalties handed down by the board. Move faster on the field – silence costs money.

The Fine Is Routine For First Time Violations
Out of nowhere, the IPL made it public: a penalty followed right after Delhi’s victory. That one came because it marked their initial breach this year under rule 2.22 – costing Axar Patel twelve hundred thousand rupees. Over at the HPCA ground in Dharamshala, they pulled off two eleven in just nineteen overs flat. Only later did things settle once the last ball passed.
IPL 2026 A Time of Subtle Shifts
Patel’s punishment stands out because of what it hints at beyond the individual case. This year, IPL 2026 feels defined by its rigid pace-of-play rules. Not long ago, Shreyas Iyer faced a ₹12 lakh cut – then later another worth double that amount. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill found himself penalized early on. So did Ruturaj Gaikwad. Ajinkya Rahane joined them. Even Hardik Pandya wasn’t spared, each hit with ₹12 lakh after their first slow-over incident.
A Victory Marred by Discipline
Out there alone, Patel found comfort in how he batted. Walking in at three down after thirty-two runs had gone by, he swung hard from the start. Fifty-six deliveries faced, just thirty-three needed – his maiden half-century this year. Luck turned, he said later, ever so slightly. David Miller reached fifty-one, using only twenty-eight. Near the end, Sharma flicked it up, then Tiwari nudged across the line – to finish it clean.
The Bigger Picture Behind The Crackdown?
Out of nowhere, the BCCI takes a hard line – it’s got reasons. When games crawl, TV slots get messy, fans lose interest, and events stumble. The rulebook doesn’t waver: Article 2.22 puts captains in charge of hitting 20 overs without delay. Step wrong once, and 12 lakh rupees vanish. Twice caught breaking rules, the price hits 24 lakh rupees. One more slip means sitting out a full game.
Looking Ahead
Winning marked Delhi’s fifth success this season, arriving just when pressure built up. A loss here would’ve made them the third side knocked out. Now, their journey continues past this round. Two games left in the group stage stand ahead, one being a key showdown versus Rajasthan Royals come May 17. Staying within time limits while bowling becomes essential now.
