New Zealand Openers Smash T20 World Cup Record in 10-Wicket Rout of UAE

Malaysia Open:

The ICC T20 World Cup 2006 continues to entertain us with action packed games. Their start to the tournament saw the first of the players from New Zealand beat the rest of the UAE by ten wickets. It was a stunning effort and a thrilling game.

In a game that is all about surprises, the Black Caps showed the world just how good, strong and professional they are.

A Partnership for the ages

The New Zealand openers then dominated the first target of a somewhat even competition. It was obvious from the time the first ball was bowled what their game plan would be: attack intelligently, rotate the strike and punish anything slightly overpitched.

They also showed the world how to bat in twenty20. The opening duo set a new record for the highest opening partnership in the history of the T20 World Cup without losing a wicket. They worked well in tandem at the crease as they scored the majority of the runs by running fast between the wickets and hitting the ball hard and clean.Even though they did not run the fastest they found it very easy to score singles and the required run rate never appeared to be a problem.

Planning for a bowl before the fireworks

The NZ bowlers prepared the fielding side superbly and kept down the UAE to well below par. With 10 overs in the powerplay, the pace bowlers kept things tight and with the use of various balls and positive field placings the spinners kept everything tight in the middle overs.

The strategy was clear and effective don’t let a big partnership develop. The regular wickets kept the UAE from accelerating and the total was always defendable. They just had to perfect and NZ didn’t
The thing that struck me most in the show was how well NZ did. Today hitting boundaries is a crucial element of all T20 sides. Today I saw that a combination of planning and structure is very important.

The openers construct a solid innings and work each ball. They work the good balls but put away the bad ones. They were never in a rush or trying too hard, just playing controlled power shots.

Today away side the UAE saw that they have much still to learn from the top sides. Simply having the skill is not enough to beat the top sides. Also you need to able to adapt when the conditions get tough. The UAE were resilient, but just could not get around NZs discipline.
