The Indian Premier League (IPL) has reached its peak season in 2026, but for the Delhi Capitals (DC), the tune is beginning to die away. After being billed as one of the most balanced teams, the franchise is now in an utter scramble to survive. The cold reality that the “City of Hearts” is experiencing is that, with inconsistent performances and a shrinking Net Run Rate (NRR), their playoff dreams are hanging by a thread.
The table of points reveals a sad tale as we enter the halfway point of May. After a series of close calls and a particularly dismal 8-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings yesterday, Delhi is now languishing in the bottom half of the table.
What was supposed to be a powerful campaign is now a nightmare of a tactic. Although there have been glimpses of personal brilliance, the team has not had that cohesive X-factor that can help the team close out games in the death overs.
1. The Powerplay Paralysis
The first six overs are what win T20 cricket, and this is where the Delhi blood has been shed the most. Be it in batting or bowling, the Capitals have always lost the initial drive. Their first two have not been able to give 50+ run stands and put the middle order to repair and not accelerate. On the other hand, their bowlers have not been able to get away with early swing, and therefore opposition openers have been able to get off to flying starts.
2. Middle-Order Muddle
Although there have been instances where KL Rahul and Axar Patel have had to fight lone battles, the absence of a fixed number 4 and 5 has often led them to have to fight alone. The rule of an Impact Player, which should have been a means of flexibility, has made the lack of a reliable power hitter in the middle overs, capable of tackling spin, noticeable in Delhi.
3. Bowling Firepower Deficit
The want of a real “enforcer” in the pace department has been sensed. Although Kuldeep Yadav is a threat, in many instances, he has not been getting the backing of the other end. Opposition teams have been effective in targeting the fifth and sixth bowling options in Delhi, and they have been consistent in plundering 50+ runs in the final four overs of the innings.
Is it over? Not quite. But the road to the top four is now an uphill battle on a sheet of ice.
Requirement Current Status:
Remaining Matches – 4 Matches
Must-Win Count – 4 out of 4
Points Target – 16 Points (The “Safe” Zone)
NRR Correction – Should win by very big margins in order to compensate for -0.949.
Although Delhi may still win their remaining matches against the likes of KKR and Rajasthan Royals, it is no longer in their control to determine their fate. They will have to have the results of other games go their way, that is, hope that other teams in the 3rd and 4th positions will perform poorly.

Surface: This is a traditional batting-friendly surface with small boundaries, but in 2025 statistics, bowlers began to have a slight advantage.
Weather: Rainy weather will be experienced today, and this may lead to the ball skidding more by the pacers.
Toss Strategy: There is the possibility of rain and the usual evening dew factor, and therefore, the winning captain will almost always choose to bowl first.
Should a miracle happen, the burden is definitely on the shoulders of the veterans:
Axar Patel: The tactical maneuvers that he will execute in the field will be under scrutiny as the captain.
The Top Order: Has to come up with a means of taking advantage of the fielding restrictions and introduce a cushioning effect behind the bowlers.
The Death Specialists: Does the fact that yorkers and slower balls are not only accurate but also more precise than at any previous time? Also, mark the beginning of the second phase, the stage of survival.
