A fresh spark lit up cricket recently. This time it wasn’t a veteran but a boy of fifteen – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Opening for Rajasthan Royals, he stormed through the IPL unlike any teen before him. Records bent under his bat, making past giants seem distant. Even names like Gayle and Kohli faded into quiet awe. Behind closed doors, whispers grow louder each day. Talk now circles one thought only – how soon until he stands in full national colours?
Based on the analysis done by Khelosports, soon could come the day, if Devajit Saikia’s recent words mean what they seem to say. While he leads the BCCI as secretary, hints drop like loose threads. What once felt distant now feels near. Not quite here, yet no longer out of reach. Time bends slightly at the edges when such signals appear. One pause, then another – then movement. Behind quiet statements often lies a shift waiting.
Speaking only to Hindustan Times, Saikia laid out exactly where the board stands. Far beyond mere promise, the young player is now called “exceptional” by senior officials at BCCI.
“Vaibhav is a new wonderkid in Indian cricket, and I’m sure he will also take the world by storm in the coming days,” Saikia said as reported by Khelosports.
All our selectors are part of the IPL tournament – everybody, all the selectors are watching these matches very closely. In the upcoming selection meetings for the Indian team’s UK trip, I’m sure the selectors will do whatever is necessary and is in his best interest, given the way he has performed.”
The message to chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his panel could not be clearer. Saikia went further, adding, “Many other players performed exceedingly well. But Vaibhav is exceptional, and I am very happy that God is kind – that a new wonderkid has been presented to the Indian cricket scene at this stage.”
What explains the BCCI’s rush becomes clear through Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 performance. In sixteen innings, his total reached 776 runs – average nearly 49, strike rate close to 238. That kind of output doesn’t come often.
What stands out most? His power hitting. Seventy-two times he sent the ball into the crowd – breaking a mark set by Chris Gayle back in 2012 when he managed just 59. One massive shot every 4.31 balls faced, while Gayle needed nearly twice that number per blast in his peak year.
Most surprising? Five hundred twenty one of those seven hundred seventy six runs arrived before the fielding restrictions lifted – never done before in one IPL season by any player at that stage. Walking away, he held not only the Orange Cap but also claims on Emerging Player, Most Sixes, Super Striker, plus MVP honors.
Even RCB’s title-winning captain Rajat Patidar couldn’t stop praising him. “He’s so young, and the way he’s dominated this tournament – he just didn’t play, he dominated every top bowler,” Patidar said.
Now comes word that Sooryavanshi joins the India A lineup for the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka, set to begin June 9. The BCCI moves slow, though – eyes on the young talent, yet holding back from full exposure just yet.
Reports suggest the move was planned carefully – those picking the team aimed to study his game more closely within the Pathways group prior to deciding about the UK trip. With the tri-series wrapping up on June 21, evaluators will have a narrow window to review how he handles the 50-over style ahead of selecting the main squad bound for Ireland and England.
A tough call sits on the table today. Never before has a 15-year-old worn India’s jersey in T20Is. Yet Saikia made clear that choices ahead won’t follow routine paths – decisions will bend toward what helps the boy most, both now and years beyond. While precedent stands firm, care for growth quietly leads.
First up, India plays Ireland twice in Belfast – June 26 and 28 – a rare stop after nearly two decades away from the city. Right after, a string of five games versus England begins July 1. Later that month, another stretch: three fixtures against Zimbabwe come into view.
Should the selectors push Sooryavanshi through quickly, debuting during the Ireland series might ease him in – pressure stays light ahead of the tougher clash with England.
That flight to Belfast might just carry a 15-year-old, thanks to Saikia’s clear support and Sooryavanshi’s heavy IPL stats. Words have come from the BCCI. Now, everything rests with Ajit Agarkar – his choice may set India’s course for years ahead.
