The T20 World Cup 2026 final was a super duper day for India! We beat New Zealand by a huge 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. It was a massive win, and we got to keep our trophy. The whole country was so happy! But there was one thing that made all the fans scratch their heads. We saw MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the VIP box, which was awesome. But where was Virat Kohli? Everyone was looking for him, and he was not there! It was like having a party and your best friend forgot to come. So today, we are going to talk about why Virat Kohli did not go to the T20 World Cup 2026 final, unlike MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.
It was so cool to see Mahi and Rohit at the stadium. They even walked onto the field with the trophy before the match started! It gave me goosebumps. Dhoni won the first-ever T20 World Cup for us in 2007, and Rohit won the last one in 2024. So they are like the kings of T20 World Cups. They were there in a special way, as “former winning captains.” It was like the BCCI and ICC said a big thank you to them. But Virat has also captained India so many times. Why was he not invited to this special function?
So here is the first big reason I found out. Dhoni and Rohit were there because they had actually won the T20 World Cup as captains. Virat Kohli is the best batsman in the world, no doubt. But when he was the captain, we never won the T20 World Cup. We played really well, but we just could not get that trophy. So when the organizers called all the old champion captains to come and be part of the final, Virat’s name was not on that list. It is sad but true. He did not have an “official” job to do there because he never lifted that cup as a captain. That must have felt so bad for him.
The second reason is more about Virat the person, not the cricketer. You guys know that Virat Kohli stopped playing T20 cricket for India after we won the World Cup in 2024. He also stopped playing Test matches. Now he only plays one-day matches. So he has a lot of free time now to be with his family – his wife Anushka, his daughter Vamika, and his son Akaay. In an old interview, Virat once said that when he stops playing cricket, he will just vanish and people won’t see him for a long time because he wants to be with his family.
Perhaps he was just watching the game from his couch while his kids were jumping on him from his house. Think how enjoyable that must be! He spent his entire life either on a plane or in a resort. In his pajamas, he may now just relax and cheer for India. That really makes a win quite pleasant to enjoy. He definitely chose to celebrate at home with his friends and family, which is what he did. That must be respected, don’t we?
While many former players and fans celebrated the moment in different ways, the tournament itself has been full of memorable performances. One such moment came when Sanju Samson delivered a record-breaking knock in the T20 World Cup, creating history with his brilliant batting display. His innings not only thrilled cricket fans but also became one of the standout performances of the tournament. You know, even though he was not in the stadium, everyone could feel that he was missing. During the whole tournament, when India was batting, sometimes we got scared. We thought, “Oh no, who will save us now?” Because earlier, when Virat was there, if we needed 40 runs in the last 3 overs, we were not scared. He is the best chaser in the world.
In one match against South Africa, India lost badly, and all the fans on Twitter (or X, or whatever we call it now) were saying, “We miss Virat Kohli!” He is like that safety net in a circus. Even if he is not playing anymore, we still want to see his face in the crowd. It makes us feel safe. So seeing Dhoni and Rohit was great, but it was like we were eating a pizza without the extra cheese. Something was definitely missing.

So in the end, we should not be too angry at Virat Kohli. Yes, we all wanted to see him sitting next to Dhoni and laughing. That would have been the best photo ever! But he had his reasons. He was not called there officially, and he wanted to be with his little kids. Being a dad is also a very important job.
India won the match, and that is the main thing. Whether Virat was in the stadium or in his house, he must be so proud of this new team. They are doing a great job without him and Rohit in T20s. Let us just be happy that we have such amazing players. And who knows, maybe for the next World Cup final, we will see all three of them – Dhoni, Rohit, AND Virat – sitting together. Until then, let’s just celebrate this big win and stop asking “Why Virat Kohli Didn’t Attend T20 World Cup 2026 Final” too much. He is our king, and he can sit wherever he wants!
